Before we get there
Most emergency plumbing damage happens in the time between noticing the problem and getting the water stopped. Do these in order, then call.
For one fixture, turn the small valve under the sink or behind the toilet clockwise. For a burst pipe or a leak you can't find, close the main shutoff, usually where the water line enters the house, in the basement or utility room near the front wall.
Turn the gas valve on the unit to off, or flip the breaker for an electric heater. Then close the cold-water valve on top of the tank so it stops refilling.
Get rugs, boxes, and electronics off the wet floor. Put a towel or bucket under an active drip. If sewage is coming up, stop running water anywhere in the house so you don't push more through.
